Melanoma Awareness Month
May is Melanoma Awareness Month, and we want to shine a spotlight on it. We support cancer charities every year with our Colors Against Cancer line, and that includes those dedicated to melanoma research and awareness. Throughout this month we will be sharing information about some great melanoma cancer causes over on our Facebook page.
Melanoma is the most common type of cancer in the United States and cases of it have tripled in the last 30 years. Approximately 160,000 Americans are expected to be diagnosed with melanoma this year alone. The increasing rate of diagnosis in young people is especially alarming, with the incidence of people under the age of 30 developing melanoma increasing faster than in any other demographic group.
90% of melanoma cases are believed to be caused by sunlight and UV light. This is why it’s so important to limit sun exposure and wear sunscreen. When detected early, melanoma is highly curable, but late-stage melanoma takes the lives of approximately 10,000 Americans each year, so doctors urge people to check their skin regularly for changes or irregularities in moles. Simply checking your skin could save your life! Go to Melanoma.org to find out what to look for, and also for information about advocacy and awareness.
This month we’re also running a contest to promote awareness for melanoma. We’ll be choosing three people from our mailing list to win a limited edition Melanoma Awareness Black Twist. If you’re not on the list already, you can sign up here.
