Pride Month is a big deal to us, so join us in celebrating all month long! Over on our Facebook page we’re going to be talking about LGBTQ history and issues – past and present – throughout the month of June. We’re also running a contest, and the winner will get one of our Pride Pony Tails. If you’re currently on our mailing list, then you’re already entered! If not, you can sign up here to be entered into the contest (plus you’ll get 10% off your first order). If that wasn’t enough, we have a Pride Month promo code too! Pride Month is so important because it’s a time that’s dedicated to recognizing the legacy of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals and the positive impact that they have made on the world. We still live in a time when certain inequalities and discrimination against people based upon their sexual orientation or gender identity are allowed, so it is not only meaningful, but vital that we pay tribute to and celebrate the lives of LGBTQ individuals, as well as continue the fight for equality. Even in the United States members of the LGBTQ community face discrimination and hate crimes, not to mention new leadership that has been less than friendly, to say the least. As of our writing this, the President still hasn’t signed an official proclamation for Pride Month, breaking from recent tradition, and the new administration has taken other steps that threaten LGBT equality.
The catalyst for Pride Month was the Stonewall riots that occurred in June of 1969 – they were some of the first, and most prominent, public shows of resistance against homophobic discrimination. After that, the last Sunday in June was celebrated as Gay Pride Day, with the whole month of June later being declared Pride Month. It was in 2000 that President Bill Clinton signed a proclamation that named June “Gay & Lesbian Pride Month.” This passage from that proclamation is just as relevant and important today as it was then:
“This June, recognizing the joys and sorrows that the gay and lesbian movement has witnessed and the work that remains to be done, we observe Gay and Lesbian Pride Month and celebrate the progress we have made in creating a society more inclusive and accepting of gays and lesbians.”
Please join us in celebrating Pride Month and everything that it represents!
