October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we will be doing our part to promote awareness throughout the month.

Like so many others, we at Crystal Delights have been personally affected by cancer, so spreading awareness and supporting cancer charities is extremely important to us. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women worldwide; 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their life. It seems that we all know someone who has or has had breast cancer. We want to encourage everyone to donate to breast cancer causes this month, and to learn more about breast cancer and its prevention. We also urge everyone to support causes that are truly committed to making a difference and that use their funds wisely.

Every October you have no doubt noticed that many companies adopt pink ribbons and pink coloring for their products. Raising awareness is always a good thing, but never assume that your money is going to charity just because you see that pink ribbon. We suggest donating directly to charities with good track records of providing funding to breast cancer treatment and research programs. The National Breast Cancer Coalition is one such charity, and we have been donating to them for years. They have set January 1, 2020 as their deadline to know how to end breast cancer, and their advocacy has led to over $2.89 billion in additional federal funding for breast cancer research.

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is another great charity which only donates 3% of their funds to awareness, and around 88% directly to breast cancer research, so you can rest assured that your donation is funding science, not just pink swag. The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is a highly regarded organization to donate to, especially if you are interested in helping to fund treatment services for cancer patients. Many charities focus on treatment, prevention, and research, which are all vital, but too often the mental and emotional toll of cancer can be forgotten. Living Beyond Breast Cancer recognizes those things and provides resources and support networks for people impacted by breast cancer. These are just a few of the wonderful, responsible breast cancer charities out there, and we suggest using Charity Navigator if you’d like to explore other options for giving.

Throughout the month we will be promoting breast cancer awareness on Facebook, and as always, we will be donating a portion of the profits from our Colors Against Cancer line to cancer charities.
